"If it weren't for Al... ThinkQuest would most likely

have been just an idea." This statement has been heard

many times. Al, retiring on September 15, was feted

at the Millbrook Country Club, Greenwich, Connecticut, USA.

----) RESOURCES IN LIBRARY FOR LESSON PLANS

Back-to-School brings new ideas and new resources for classsrooms

Teachers. ThinkQuest has gathered some of the very best sources

for lesson plans in its Reference Desk. The New York Times Learning

Network, which uses ThinkQuest sites in integrated plans, has been

added to The National Library of Education and Kathy Schrock's Guide.

The National Library of Education includes Gateway to Educational

Materials (GEM), Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC, for

research and plans), and USNEI's Education Around the World links.

2. FEATURE: AZA OPINION DAY

ThinkQuest students are called to be the first participants in OPINION

DAY, a global poll inviting millions of K-12 children and youth to voice

their

visions, hopes, and concerns about the future of our natural world.

Starting October 2nd, you can log on to Azasweb.com--and be one of the

first to answer this "petition for the planet." By taking this poll, you'll

become an ambassador to leaders whose decisions affect the natural

world--locally and globally. You can also encourage your teachers,

friends and family members to answer the poll.

The OPINION DAY campaign will be launched on Monday, October 2nd and will

run through the end of April, 2001, which is National Zoo and Aquarium

Month.

OPINION DAY is part of Azasweb.com, the new website introduced by "Aza,"

the official spokescritter of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (the

AZA). The first Aza Award will be presented to the ThinkQuest entry that

best uses the web to explore the wonders of the natural world. In

addition to being eligible for the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge, each

student

member of the winning Aza Award team will receive a $1000 scholarship, and

the

winning coach and school will each receive a $500 cash award.

Tell your friends about OPINION DAY and the Aza Award challenge--and let

your voices be heard! The AZA salutes your efforts for the betterment of

our planet.

Katie, a deaf member of the team will be featured

from the A G. Bell Foundation. Madeline was interviewed on CBS

---) "Dotcom": Is It An "Official Word" ?

And: How Long Will It Last Before Being Declared "Archaic"?

The emergence of the Internet has had many well documented effects on

world culture. One aspect that spikes my interest is the exponential

expansion

of unusual word development. Who would have thought that the letter "w"

would become so used in language and documents? Or that the hyphenated

prefix

"e-" would be the beginning of so many new words (e-commerce, e-mail,

e-books,

etc.?). Or even imagine that words such as "Digerati" would evolve to

describe those involved with the Net?

I'm sure that all languages see new combinations of symbols to spell out

versions of "Dotcoms", itself a word coined recently. Initially, however,

the word

"dot" was used to note placement of levels of an unique address, according

to the

idea's generator [Brad Templeton: http://www.templetons.com/brad/ ]. He also

notes that the American Dialect Society found "dot" the "most useful word of

the year".

"Dotcom" IS an "official word", according to the editors of the Random

House Dictionary, whch lists the spelling as "dot-com". Read about this and

You can see so many clever, outrageous, ridiculous, familiar, and

funny names for commerce on the Net. They may not all become words, but

will be used often as recognizable brands.

However, just as the telephone area code

system began to break down, it is just as likely that the number of

possible "dotcom" names will reach the limit.The theorized number of unique

domain names (4,294,967,296 IPv4 addresses), based on the protocol for

addresses,

suggests it will be a while [http://www.3com.com/nsc/501302.html ].

Look at Brad Templeton's "Domain Name Problem and Solution". The article

includes the phasing out of "com" and replacing all with meaningless TDL's

(top

level domains).

Perhaps you will have other approaches when the time comes.
